Tucked away in Osaka’s Nishitenma, Oimatsu Kitagawa is an intimate kaiseki counter with just eight seats and one private room. Chef Kitagawa trained for years at the Michelin-starred Gion Sasaki before opening his own place in 2012, and the restaurant has continued to earn a Michelin star. There’s no fixed menu—each course is built around the best seasonal ingredients of the day. Expect a yuzu-scented dashi, heartwarming soft-shelled turtle broth, steak that looks firm but turns tender and juicy, and rice cooked with fresh fish and produce that lingers in your memory. It’s an easy walk from Yodoyabashi or Minamimorimachi.
